Reputable Boarders Checklist

Is the boarder insured and licensed?

A licence is required to run a pet boarding kennel, home boarding service, or daycare facility. Only those who have met the government’s requirements will be awarded a licence.

To familiarise yourself with the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963, click here. Understanding these requirements will help you find reputable pet boarding.

Licences should be displayed on the premises; if not, customers can ask to see the documentation prior to booking.

Additionally, boarders should also have insurance specifically for pet boarding. The level of coverage will vary, although most cover the financial aspects of injuries.

What qualifications are held by the staff?

Knowledgeable staff are more likely to provide suitable care for animals than those who are not experienced or qualified. This enables staff members to undertake numerous tasks, including caring for and exercising the animals, cleaning the premises, etc.

Boarding carers should be qualified in animal welfare, handling, first aid, and behaviour. When contacting or visiting a boarding facility, be sure to ask for details of the staff’s qualifications and relevant experience.

For dogs and cats with additional requirements, such as medications or behaviour issues, the staff should understand how to handle these animals in a safe manner.

Are there safety measures in place?

Knowing animals are safe in a boarding facility is essential for pet owners. When searching for boarding options, it is important to ask about the additional safety measures in place before booking, such as CCTV on the premises, on-call veterinary attention, etc.

This also includes how dogs and cats are cared for. Many quality boarding services will carry out thorough checks of pets’ individual needs if they are new clients. The most common aspects to discuss are the pet’s vaccination history, behaviour, and dietary and medical needs.
